About ConvertHEICto
ConvertHEICto started from a simple annoyance: iPhone photos that won’t open anywhere else, and online converters that want you to upload personal pictures to a server you know nothing about.
How it works
When you add a photo, your browser decodes it with libheif compiled to WebAssembly, then re-encodes it with the same high-quality codecs used by Google’s Squoosh (MozJPEG, OxiPNG, libwebp and libavif), writes GIF, TIFF and BMP files with lightweight encoders, or builds a PDF with pdf-lib. All of that happens in a background thread on your own device. There is no upload step and no server that could keep a copy.
Details we care about
- Photos come out upright, because the rotation stored by the iPhone is applied before saving.
- The iPhone’s wide Display P3 color profile is carried over — or, for formats that can’t store a profile, the colors are converted to sRGB — so nothing looks washed out.
- Date taken and camera info are kept; GPS location is removed unless you choose otherwise.
- It works on iPhone and iPad in Safari, not just on desktop.
How the site is funded
The converter is free to use. The site is paid for by a small number of clearly labeled ads.
