Windows can’t show iPhone photos out of the box, but there are several free ways to view them. Here are the best HEIC viewers for Windows 11 and 10, what each needs, and which to pick.
Quick comparison
| Viewer | Price | Needs HEVC extension? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Photos | Free | Yes | PCs that already have the codecs |
| XnView MP | Free for private use | No | A fast, full-featured viewer |
| IrfanView | Free for non-commercial use | Depends on setup | Lightweight browsing |
| GIMP | Free, open source | No | Viewing and editing |
| CopyTrans HEIC | Free for home use | No | Explorer thumbnails + Photo Viewer |
| Google Drive / Photos | Free | No (in browser) | A quick look, no installs |
| ConvertHEICto | Free | No (in browser) | Turning HEIC into JPG to open anywhere |
1. Microsoft Photos (built in)
The default Photos app opens HEIC once the HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions are installed. It’s the most seamless option because thumbnails also appear in File Explorer. The catch is the HEVC codec, which costs a small fee unless your PC includes a free version. Setup steps are in HEIF Image Extensions for Windows.
2. XnView MP
XnView MP is a powerful image viewer and organizer with its own HEIC support, so it doesn’t need Microsoft’s codec. It also handles batch renaming and format conversion. Free for private and educational use; businesses need a license.
3. IrfanView
A very small, fast viewer popular for decades. HEIC support comes via its plugins package and, depending on version, may rely on the Windows codecs. Free for non-commercial use. Great if you want something lightweight and already use it.
4. GIMP
The free, open-source image editor opens HEIC/HEIF files (version 2.10 and later) using its own libraries. It’s heavier than a viewer but lets you edit and export straight away.
5. CopyTrans HEIC for Windows
A plugin rather than an app: it adds HEIC thumbnails to File Explorer, makes HEIC open in the classic Windows Photo Viewer, and adds a right-click Convert to JPEG. Free for home use. Questions about its safety are answered in CopyTrans HEIC for Windows: is it safe?
6. Google Drive or Google Photos
Upload the photo in your browser and click it to preview. Nothing to install, but you’re uploading your photos to Google, and you still end up with a HEIC file you can’t use elsewhere.
7. Convert instead of viewing
If you need to use the photos — email, upload, print, edit in another program — converting is often simpler than finding a viewer. The HEIC to JPG converter runs in Edge or Chrome, converts on your PC without uploading, and gives you JPGs that open in every app. See How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows for other methods.
Which should you choose?
- Want it to “just work” in Windows? Microsoft Photos with both extensions.
- Don’t want to pay for HEVC? XnView MP or GIMP.
- Want Explorer thumbnails for free? CopyTrans HEIC.
- Need JPGs, not a viewer? Convert them.
