How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Any Device

Got a HEIC photo you need as a JPG? There’s a fast, free way to do it on every device you own — most of them don’t need any extra software. This guide shows the best method for each platform, links to detailed step-by-step guides, and explains how to keep quality and photo details intact.

The 10-second answer: open the HEIC to JPG converter, drop in your photos, and download the JPGs. It works on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Chromebook, handles batches, and converts on your device without uploading anything.

Method 1: Convert in your browser (any device)

This is the method that works everywhere, including on a work PC where you can’t install software.

  1. Open convertheicto.com/jpg.
  2. Tap Choose photos or drag your .heic files onto the box. Add as many as you like.
  3. Leave quality at 85 for sharing, or raise it to 92+ for printing.
  4. Download each JPG, click Download all as ZIP, or on iPhone tap Save / Share to put the JPGs straight into Photos.

Unlike most online converters, nothing is uploaded: the decoding and encoding run in your browser. The tool also fixes rotation automatically, keeps the date taken, and removes GPS location by default.

Method 2: iPhone and iPad — the Files app

Since iOS 16, the Files app can convert images without any extra apps:

  1. In Photos, select the photo(s) and tap Share → Save to Files.
  2. Open Files, find the photo, and long-press it.
  3. Choose Quick Actions → Convert Image, pick JPEG, and choose a size.

A JPG copy appears next to the original. More iPhone tricks — including Mail, Shortcuts and changing your camera settings — are in our iPhone conversion guide.

Method 3: Mac — Finder’s Convert Image

On macOS Monterey and later:

  1. Select one or more HEIC files in Finder.
  2. Right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image.
  3. Choose JPEG, a size, and whether to keep metadata, then click Convert to JPEG.

Preview (File → Export) and the Photos app (File → Export) work too, and Terminal users can use the built-in sips command. All four are covered in How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac.

Method 4: Windows — Photos or Paint

Windows needs Microsoft’s HEIF and HEVC extensions before it can read HEIC at all (many Windows 11 PCs already have them). Once they’re installed:

  1. Open the HEIC in Paint.
  2. Choose File → Save as → JPEG picture.

If you’d rather not install extensions, use the browser converter instead. The full walkthrough, including a command-line option and Windows 7, is in How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 and 11. If HEIC files won’t even open, start with How to open HEIC files on Windows.

Method 5: Android and Chromebook

Most Android phones can view HEIC but have no “convert” button, and Samsung’s options vary by One UI version. The reliable route on both Android and Chromebook is to open the converter in Chrome, pick the photos, and download the JPGs. Device-specific tips are in our Android and Chromebook guides.

Using an app you already have

Design and photo apps can convert too. Canva, for example, accepts HEIC uploads and can download them as JPG — handy if you’re editing the photo anyway; see How to convert HEIC to JPG in Canva. For a plain conversion, though, a dedicated converter is faster and keeps the photo’s metadata.

How to convert HEIC to JPG without losing quality

HEIC and JPG are both lossy, so converting adds one extra round of compression. You can make that loss invisible:

  • Use quality 85–95. At 85 most people can’t tell the difference on screen; use 92–95 for printing or further editing.
  • Don’t resize unless you need a smaller file.
  • Convert once from the original. Re-saving a JPG repeatedly is what degrades it, not the first conversion.
  • Keep the color profile. iPhones shoot in the wide Display P3 color space; converters that drop the profile make colors look dull. ConvertHEICto embeds it automatically.
  • Need zero loss? Convert to PNG instead — it’s lossless, though the files are several times bigger. See How to convert HEIC to PNG.

Can I just rename the file to .jpg?

No. Changing IMG_1234.HEIC to IMG_1234.jpg doesn’t change the data — the file is still HEIC inside, and most apps will reject it or show a broken image. Some low-quality “converters” do exactly this, which is why people search for a real HEIC to JPG converter. We compare trustworthy tools in Best free HEIC to JPG converters.

What about converting to PDF?

If a form or application wants a document rather than an image, convert straight to PDF and combine several photos into one file with the HEIC to PDF converter. Platform-by-platform steps are in How to convert HEIC to PDF.

Stop getting HEIC files in the first place

If you convert constantly, change the source: on iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to shoot JPG, or set Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic so photos copied to a computer arrive as JPG. Details and trade-offs are in How to turn off HEIC on iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Can you convert HEIC to JPG without losing quality?

Both formats are lossy, so a conversion adds one more round of JPG compression. At quality 85–95 the difference isn't visible; keep the original HEIC if you want a perfect master copy.

What's the fastest free way to convert HEIC to JPG?

On any device with a browser, an in-browser converter like ConvertHEICto: drop the files in and download JPGs. On a Mac, Finder's Convert Image quick action is equally quick; on iPhone, the Files app's Convert Image.

Can I convert many HEIC files to JPG at once?

Yes. Browser converters, Mac's Finder and Preview, and command-line tools all handle batches. See our batch conversion guide for step-by-step options.

Does converting HEIC to JPG keep the date the photo was taken?

Good converters copy the EXIF data, including the capture date and camera model. ConvertHEICto keeps it by default and removes GPS location unless you choose otherwise.
